What Is SurfEasy VPN?

Based in Toronto, SurfEasy is an online privacy company that offers a suite of security tools/services, along with a strong VPN. Founded in 2011, the business is now a part of the Opera Software. The service runs as a separate entity and offers the ability to indulge in secure torrenting and ad-free browsing. However, there are a few security concerns with using the VPN. For more information, read this comprehensive SurfEasy VPN review below:

1.       Supports OpenVPN Protocol

2.       AES 256-BIT Encryption

3.       Supports P2P/Torrenting

4.       Free Trial Available

5.       Ad-Blocker

1.       Few Location Choices

2.       No 24/7 Support Available

SurfEasy Pricing Review

In terms of pricing, our SurfEasy VPN review unveils that the provider offers two packages to its customers, further divided into two options: Total and Ultra. The monthly Total plan starts at a low $4.99 and allows users to leverage simultaneous connections to five devices, tracker blocking, and unlimited bandwidth. The monthly Ultra plan comes with the same offerings, but provides 12 additional countries and Torrent protection for $11.99.

These prices drop, if you decide to opt for the annual packages. The yearly Total plan allows users to leverage the same features, while benefiting from a 20% discount. This brings the monthly pricing down to $3.99, which means you pay $47.88 for yearly access. The yearly Ultra plan gives the best value by offering a 46% discount, which means you pay $77.88 for annual access. Though still expensive, SurfEasy tends to be a reliable service.

SurEasy VPN Pricing Plans

SurfEasy Free Trial Package Review

According to our SurfEasy VPN review, the provider even offers a Free Trial package to customers. You can test the service on 5 devices simultaneously with a 500MB limit. Users can also leverage an additional 250mb data upon confirming their email address. Once signed up, you can easily download and use their Android, Windows, Mac, or iOS apps.

SurfEasy Payment Methods Review

According to my SurfEasy review, the provider does not accept a multitude of payment options. The provider’s goal is to keep things simple, but this may end up chasing potential customers away. You can only subscribe to a plan, if you have a Visa card of PayPal account. The service does not support options like MasterCard, American Express, Maestro, or Discover.

SurfEasy Payment Methods Review

Sadly, users have lack of privacy for payments, as SurfEasy does not offer support for Bitcoin either. Based on our observation of the VPN, we would definitely like seeing an addition in the payment options supported. This can increase the reliability and versatility of the VPN, which can work tremendously in its favor i.e. attract more customers to pay and use their service.

How to Cancel SurfEasy Account Subscription?

Our SurfEasy VPN review discovers that canceling your account with the service is incredibly easy. All you have to do is log into your account. Click on the “trashcan” icon and accept the subsequent prompts to continue with the process of removing the plan.

Doing so will stop the automatic renewal of your subscription. For complete account deletion, you will have to submit a ticket. Please note though that SurfEasy does not offer refunds, after crossing the 7-day purchasing period. For cancelling the subscription on Android or iOS, follow this guide.

SurfEasy Features Review

SurfEasy definitely goes the extra mile in offering users extra compatibility and reliability. When you opt for the service, you can feel assured to leverage a number of useful features. Among these, include:

Peer-to-peer (P2P)/Torrenting

If you are looking for a reliable VPN that does not place any bandwidth limitations or tracks your torrenting activity, SurfEasy is a good option. The service offers complete anonymity. This means, upon connecting to a SurfEasy server, the VPN will conceal all your torrent traffic. The only catch: to enable P2P/Torrenting, you need to purchase the Ultra Plan.

Advert Blocker

Advert blocker is a new feature offered by SurfEasy. It is only available on the iOS application and typically stops websites from tracking your browsing activity with fewer distractions. The VPN will block irritating ads from all websites, which saves you data and bandwidth. This also enables users to enjoy faster page load speeds, while guaranteeing that your browsing experience is more pleasant and less troubling without annoying pop-ups and advertisements.

Domain Name System (DNS) Leak Protection

The SurfEasy applications provide DNS leak protection, which guarantees that your real address is not traceable to any third-party service or government entity. The DNS leak protection, however, occurs at server level. This means, it is not available as a feature on dedicated apps. You cannot toggle it on and off.

SurfEasy Bank-Grade Encryption

For granting its users the utmost level of privacy and anonymity, my SurfEasy review unveils the VPN using strong bank-grade AES 256-bit encryption on its OpenVPN protocol. This high level of encryption on your browsing and torrenting traffic will mask your identity and prevent governmental agencies from tracing the IP address back to you. This not only protects your personal data, but it also ensures you stay away from copyright infringement issues when accessing restricted content.

SurfEasy One Click IP Masking

Upon reviewing the SurfEasy VPN, I came to know the client is incredibly easy-to-use and promotes high levels of user-friendliness. The desktop clients tend to be incredibly intuitive, allowing users to switch locations by a simple click. The client will automatically figure out which servers are best in terms of bandwidth and load, according to your location. Not only does this reduce the hassle of switching servers consistently, but it also saves you lots of time.

SurfEasy Performance Tests

To give you a better idea about the reliability of the service, I conducted a few performance tests. If you are double-minded about the VPN, these tests might help with the decision-making process:

Speed Test

Below is a speed test performed on my 50Mbps connection to give you an unbiased view on the speeds you will be able to leverage when connecting to different SurfEasy servers.

Local ISP

The results below will give you a better understanding of the difference between the primary network speed and SurfEasy premium servers.

SurfEasy Performance Tests

Connected to SurfEasy France Server

The US to France server tests showed excellent speed levels. From 50.67Mbps, the download speed reduced to 38.29 Mbps and upload speeds to 51.23Mbps, with latency up to 633 ms.

SurfEasy France Server

Connected to SurfEasy Germany Server

The US to Germany server tests were quite impressive too. You can leverage 32.25Mbps download and 37.48mbps speed with 231ms latency. This is still quite a lot of speed for browsing/torrenting!

SurfEasy Germany Server

WebRTC Leak Test

Nothing can be worse than subscribing to a VPN service that does not utilize strong enough encryption and leaks your IP address. To ensure SurfEasy is completely safe, we performed a WebRTC leak test on browserleaks.com. As you can see from the results below, there were no leaks and the testing service was unable to figure out your IPv6, Local, and Public IP address.

SurfEasy Servers Review

According to our SurfEasy VPN review, the service provides 1000+ servers in 16 locations for connection on all accounts, including the Free Trial. Among these include the United States, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Spain, Singapore, Romania, Poland, Norway, Netherlands, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Canada, Brazil, and Australia.

For the Ultra Plan, you get to leverage an additional 12 locations, which include Denmark, Israel, Finland, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, South Africa, Mexico, Turkey, Czech Republic, and Sweden. Though the location numbers are slim, SurfEasy makes up for it through its high server per location ratio. You can establish connections on servers with less user load, granting better speeds!

SurfEasy Torrent Servers Review

One of the best things about SurfEasy is that it caters to the supports of P2P torrenting combined with full-fledged anonymity and security. Thanks to their good encryption technologies, your identity will remain safe while sharing and downloading files. Since the VPN conceals all the traffic, without limiting your connection capabilities, you get to leverage a smooth torrenting experience. Download as much as you want without worrying about bandwidth limitations or logging.

SurfEasy Streaming Servers Review

As mentioned earlier, SurfEasy has a high server per location ratio. This makes it easier for you to join connections with less server load. As a result, you get to enjoy a fast and uninterrupted streaming experience, whether its loading online games, or watching TV shows/movies online. With so many shared IPs, it will be tremendously difficult for governmental agencies or third-party ISPs to track your streaming history. Therefore, you remain safe with SurfEasy, if you are streaming pirated content.

Does SurfEasy Really Work in China or It’s Just a Plain Lie?

According to our SurfEasy VPN review, the service does not go for poor security protocols like PPTP. It uses the strong OpenVPN protocol on its Windows and Android applications. This allows users to explore the web freely in China, without worrying about getting into legal hassles. However, just to be on the safe side, we would advise using a service that supports DoubleVPN for maximum security.

SurfEasy Protocols & Encryption Review

Strong encryption is great, but tends to slow things down. One of the best traits of reputable providers is that users can modify their encryption level, according to their own needs. The same is not possible with SurfEasy, as it uses OpenVPN by default. Although they allow users to utilize IPSec protocols on iOS devices, other platforms do not share this option. Regardless, the security you receive is exceptional, as all your traffic passes through a strong, military grade, 256-bit AES encryption.

SurfEasy Logging & Privacy Policies Review

The thing about majority VPN services in the marketplace is that they do log data in varied shapes or forms, but hardly be honest about it. According to our SurfEasy VPN review, the service has quite a clear logging policy. They are extremely honest about the data they store. The VPN only keeps bandwidth logs for over a year or so, to monitor their free plans, as they impose a limitation. Apart from this, the VPN does not record any vital information that can harm your identity.

SurfEasy VPN Netflix Review

Our SurfEasy review unveils that the VPN did initially provide access to Netflix for streaming movies and TV shows freely. However, when Netflix started blocking all VPN providers, SurfEasy was unable to bypass the geo-restrictions. The support team at SurfEasy quickly replaced banned IP addresses and offered higher level of encryption for connections, granting access to Netflix. Unfortunately, the site blocked SurfEasy again, meaning you cannot stream videos with the VPN on.

SurfEasy Customer Support Review

SurfEasy has quite an average support system. There is no live chat or ticket support available for customers to receive support, but still plenty of other options for receiving advice on how to fix common or even complicated issues.

SurfEasy Friendly Phone and Email Support Review

If you have any queries or technical dilemmas, you can always email the provider directly at support@surfeasy.com. The average response time of the support team varies between 3 to 5 hours. If that does not work, SurfEasy also provides phone assistance for solving VPN related queries.

You can easily contact the support team via telephone and receive help from their customer support representative at 1-888-743-8102 (US number) or 0800-011-9492 (UK number) at any time between 8am and 8pm.  If you feel the problem is not that serious, you can always check the VPN’s blog out.

SurfEasy Phone Support Review

The blog proves to be quite helpful in answering general questions regarding the VPN and anything related to privacy. However, if you want to receive systematic guides on troubleshooting various issues, do not hesitate on checking out SurfEasy’s video support section. Here you will receive instructions in the form of videos for a variety of VPN problems.

SurfEasy Email Support Review

During my SurfEasy VPN review, I also found that the service has quite the active presence on social media pages. The provider has accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, and YouTube. If the above support options do not work, you can always message them directly on their SM pages.

Why Is My SurfEasy VPN Not Working?

According to our SurfEasy VPN review, there can be many issues, which can directly result in your VPN not working. Before you go on troubleshooting, you need to figure out the cause. The most common problem most users encounter is a slow internet connection. This is turn causes your VPN to work incredibly slow in loading pages, making it appear as if it is not working. Bear in mind that SurfEasy servers encrypt all data going back and forth between various websites and your device.

If you are connected to the internet via a Wi-Fi network on your laptop, consider using a wired connection. This may help figure out whether or not the connection speed is being an issue. If it is still slow, you know that the ISP is the problem. If your internet is working completely fine, and you still cannot get the VPN to work, consider submitting a ticket to SurfEasy. Perhaps the problem might be with the configuration of your connection.

SurfEasy Apps Compatibility Review

Based on our SurfEasy review, the VPN supports a multiple of platforms, devices, and browsers. The provider has dedicated clients for Windows, Mac, and Amazon OS. In addition, they also offer applications for mobile devices like Android, iPhone, iPad. Unlike other providers, SurfEasy VPN also offers browser extensions for Chrome and Opera. The provider also has plans of introducing an add-on for Mozilla Firefox in the future.

SurfEasy Add-On for Mozilla Firefox Browser

SurfEasy Mobile VPN Review

The SurfEasy mobile applications for iPhone and Android look and work identically to its desktop counterparts. They use the same streamlined appearance with an uncomplicated list of menus and options for boosting user-friendliness and intuitiveness. It is not difficult to establish a connection. All you have to do is set a suitable location and hit the connect button.

SurfEasy Learning Center – Tutorials Provided

According to our SurfEasy VPN review, the service even offers users help in the form of video tutorials for varied kind of problems. They range from the introduction of apps to the troubleshooting issues. Since you have step-by-step guides available for performing each task, solving problems with the VPN is a piece of cake. You can look at the video guides here.

SurfEasy Reddit Review

During my SurfEasy review, I came to know that the VPN has quite an active presence on Reddit. In fact, the provider has its own account that it uses for spreading the latest news about its service and any kind of issues its users might be facing. If you encounter any issues while using SurfEasy, you might want to consider creating a subreddit and tagging the VPN provider here. for more detail, read our Reddit VPN.

SurfEasy Alternative VPN Review

If you are looking for a VPN that offers the same level of reliability, compatibility, and security as SurfEasy or even higher, you have plenty of options available. Among some of the best alternatives, include ExpressVPN, PureVPN, NordVPN, and Ivacy. These VPN providers offer great level of privacy and security, along with fast streaming and downloading for P2P/Torrenting.

SurfEasy Affiliate Program Review

One of the best things about SurfEasy is that it offers an affiliate program for marketers, allowing them to earn money, while gaining extra MBs for the free trial account. All you have to do is share the referral links and if a person makes a purchase from that link, you earn 500MB extra data. This is a brilliant way to keeping using the service FREELY, while also for the brand to gain more traction online.

Final Verdict

Our SurfEasy VPN review establishes that the service manages to do quite well in the competitive market of online privacy and security. Though we would wish for the annual pricing to be a little cheaper, you do get to leverage quite a long list of features. The speeds were excellent and most servers averaged at 35Mbps, which is quite remarkable. One area the service can definitely work on is its customer service. There should be live chat available for instant assistance to customers.

The Good

  1. Torrent-Friendly

  4. Ad-Tracker and Blocking Features
  5. Seven-Day Money Back Guarantee

  1. Frank says:

SurfEasy is really great. But lately I can’t access my pof account. Please do something. Thanks

  2. Ryan says:

I have scanned through hundreds of VPN services, but ive only ever found a few that actually provide phone support. I’m definitely signing up for the service. Thanks for the review!

    • Admin says:

Thanks for commenting Ryan, we are always looking to help our customers. And yes, it is true that not many providers offer phone support. SurfEasy definitely gains an upperhand – thanks to this refreshing change in their service.

  3. Owen says:

Thanks for the detailed review. I was going to opt for the VPN, but then I read it only supports two payment options. And I don’t have a Visa or PayPal account!

    • Admin says:

Yes, it is rather uncanny that the service does not support a multitude of payment options. Users around the world are always looking for good payment compatibility. You might want to check out PureVPN, ExpressVPN, or NordVPN. These services offer good versatility in payment options.

  4. Michael Raymond says:

I used to think Opera’s VPN was good, but SurfEasy is definitely better. I guess its because Opera has been inspired by the software. Thanks for writing this detailed review, my opinion is pretty much the same

    • Admin says:

Thanks for sharing your experience Michael. Keep following us for more information regarding the best VPNs in the marketplace!

  5. Christine says:

I am not a tech genius and I tend to be quite dumb on understanding all this VPN limbo, but I must say SurfEasy has made my life easier. What do you think about its safety? Like can I really start downloading torrents freely?

    • Ameer says:

There is no doubt about the simplicity and ease-of-use SurfEasy offers! And sure go crazy with the VPN. You can download torrents. SurfEasy supports P2P/Torrenting and does not limit bandwidth. You will definitely have a good experience. However, make sure you only start downloading torrents, once the VPN is connected. Wouldn’t want you to get stuck with copyright hunters!

  6. Richard says:

my experience has been very good with surfeasy. stable apps dont crash, good speed on all servers even when i travel to other countries, support is slow but they help out and works with my netflix subscription, kudos!

  7. Jonah says:

Hi Ameer, im really interested in buying surfeasy but i have heard they are partners of opera browser, so will they be using my data to send me ads on mobile and my mac? they have all the servers i need and the price is decent. my friend is using the service he also commended the speed but i was wondering if they log my online habits?

    • admin says:

      Hi Jonah
yes the service is now owned by Opera Inc. I looked them up a long time ago and they have servers in 3 continents so depends where you are located. If you are in the USA they will log your data in accordance to local laws. They do mention in the privacy policy that IP addresses are never logged but they log the data you use on their network.
Performance wise it is a very good service and you should try it out if you require it for streaming and routine browsing. The price is decent so a great buy. Also try out NordVPN better server network, and we have an excellent exclusive 2 year deal for it.

  8. adi says:

I was quite satisfied with surfeasy mostly because of its price, and it offered all servers I needed. NNot into torrents, but needed something fast for kodi mobile and online streaming on PC so the UK, and USA servers were quite capable and I was surprised that not too much speed was lost also. I also tested the service with wireshark like this website mentions in a guide and it was nice to know that everything was encrypted going out of my pc. Support is not very active but I was happy they got back and helped me with setting up the service with an extra router. All in all, a good fast vpn service to use for streaming and browsing.

  9. Christopher Curlott says:

I can not say enough good things about SurfEasy. It is top notch on all fronts. I have unlimited membership because I know a winner when I see one. Big hats to the good guys! My router is a little old and not supported by windows10 or my security software so I have been working with my fingers crossed. Got SurfEasy and my internet connection is encrypted every time I log on. Their servers have not dropped me yet. There is a little and just a little lag time in the surf but for the security deliverd and my security software puts my mind at ease. It’s real nice, so come on in out of the storm.
