What Is SurfEasy VPN

SurfEasy VPN is a Canadian based (US owned) privacy provider offering it VPN & privacy services across the world. The brand develops its competency for high speed browsing, streaming and torrent downloading.

In 2015, Opera Inc. creators of the famous internet browser for desktop devices, tablets and smart phones acquired Canadian privacy service SurfEasy VPN Inc. Open now offers a dedicated VPN built into its browsers, and a dedicated OperaVPN app on both Google Play &Apple App Stores. The SurfEasy brand however operates separately and is available to subscribe from its website.

In our 2017 Surf Easy VPN review we will look back at how the provider has progressed over the past year. A change in pricing bundles, server reach, new apps, a new website outlook and better server infrastructure will all feature in our latest SurfEasy VPN review.

SurfEasy VPN Review of Pricing Plans

SurfEasy VPN has considerably changed the way it offers subscriptions, completely re-branding pricing plans. The inclusion of a free or Starter version for users has considerably increased downloads while the paid plans include:

  1. Ultra
    • Yearly subscription offered for $6.49 per month ($77.88)
    • Monthly subscription offered for $11.99 per month
  2. Total
    • Yearly subscription offered for $3.99 per month (onetime $77.88 payment)
    • Monthly subscription offered for $4.99 per month

SurEasy VPN Pricing Plans

Both SurfEasy VPN subscription plans include complete service features including:

  1. 500 ultra-fast servers in 28 countries
  2. Friendly customer support via phone and live chat 7 days a week
  3. 5 Simultaneous Logins
  4. Best in-class security & encryption
  5. Unlimited bandwidth
  6. Automatic Wi-Fi Security
  7. Multi-platform support
  8. Torrent support
  9. Tracker Blocking
  10. 7 Days Risk Free

After a conclusive review of SurfEasy VPN pricing plans, I feel the brand is ridiculously overpriced. There are other VPN providers who offer more for less value.

SurfEasy Features Review

SurfEasy definitely goes the extra mile in offering users extra compatibility and reliability. When you opt for the service, you can feel assured to leverage a number of useful features. Among these, include:

Peer-to-peer (P2P)/Torrenting

If you are looking for a reliable VPN that does not place any bandwidth limitations or tracks your torrenting activity, SurfEasy is a good option. The service offers complete anonymity. This means, upon connecting to a SurfEasy server, the VPN will conceal all your torrent traffic. The only catch: to enable P2P/Torrenting, you need to purchase the Ultra Plan.

Advert Blocker

Advert blocker is a new feature offered by SurfEasy. It is only available on the iOS application and typically stops websites from tracking your browsing activity with fewer distractions. The VPN will block irritating ads from all websites, which saves you data and bandwidth. This also enables users to enjoy faster page load speeds, while guaranteeing that your browsing experience is more pleasant and less troubling without annoying pop-ups and advertisements.

Domain Name System (DNS) Leak Protection

The SurfEasy applications provide DNS leak protection, which guarantees that your real address is not traceable to any third-party service or government entity. The DNS leak protection, however, occurs at server level. This means, it is not available as a feature on dedicated apps. You cannot toggle it on and off.

SurfEasy Performance Tests

To give you a better idea about the reliability of the service, I conducted a few performance tests. If you are double-minded about the VPN, these tests might help with the decision-making process:

Speed Test

Below is a speed test performed on my 50Mbps connection to give you an unbiased view on the speeds you will be able to leverage when connecting to different SurfEasy servers.

Local ISP

The results below will give you a better understanding of the difference between the primary network speed and SurfEasy premium servers.

SurfEasy Performance Tests

Connected to SurfEasy France Server

The US to France server tests showed excellent speed levels. From 50.67Mbps, the download speed reduced to 38.29 Mbps and upload speeds to 51.23Mbps, with latency up to 633 ms.

SurfEasy France Server

Connected to SurfEasy Germany Server

The US to Germany server tests were quite impressive too. You can leverage 32.25Mbps download and 37.48mbps speed with 231ms latency. This is still quite a lot of speed for browsing/torrenting!

SurfEasy Germany Server

WebRTC Leak Test

Nothing can be worse than subscribing to a VPN service that does not utilize strong enough encryption and leaks your IP address. To ensure SurfEasy is completely safe, I performed a WebRTC leak test on browserleaks.com. As you can see from the results below, there were no leaks and the testing service was unable to figure out your IPv6, Local, and Public IP address.

SurfEasy VPN Torrent Servers Review

SurfEasy VPN outsources its torrent servers to an Ireland based company OSL Network Services Ltd. IO still don’t understand this outsourcing of torrent servers since all three countries Canada, USA and Ireland have data retention laws and copyright infringement laws. SurfEasy VPN does not provide a list of servers where P2P file sharing & Torrents are allowed.

SurfEasy VPN Streaming Servers Review

SurfEasy VPN boldly claims that its ultra-speed servers are meant to stream high speed video. The provider establishes its competency in offering the fastest VPN servers compared to the competition. SurfEasy also published a blog to emphasize this feature.

SurfEasy Customer Support Review

SurfEasy has quite an average support system. There is no live chat or ticket support available for customers to receive support, but still plenty of other options for receiving advice on how to fix common or even complicated issues.

SurfEasy Customer Support Review

SurfEasy Friendly Phone and Email Support Review

If you have any queries or technical dilemmas, you can always email the provider directly at support@surfeasy.com. The average response time of the support team varies between 3 to 5 hours. If that does not work, SurfEasy also provides phone assistance for solving VPN related queries.

You can easily contact the support team via telephone and receive help from their customer support representative at 1-888-743-8102 (US number) or 0800-011-9492 (UK number) at any time between 8am and 8pm.  If you feel the problem is not that serious, you can always check the VPN’s blog out.

Surfeasy Phone Support Review

The blog proves to be quite helpful in answering general questions regarding the VPN and anything related to privacy. However, if you want to receive systematic guides on troubleshooting various issues, do not hesitate on checking out SurfEasy’s video support section. Here you will receive instructions in the form of videos for a variety of VPN problems.

Surfeasy Email Support Review

During my SurfEasy VPN review, I also found that the service has quite the active presence on social media pages. The provider has accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, and YouTube. If the above support options do not work, you can always message them directly on their SM pages.

SurfEasy VPN Payment Methods

According to my SurfEasy review, the provider does not accept a multitude of payment options. The provider’s goal is to keep things simple, but this may end up chasing potential customers away. You can only subscribe to a plan, if you have a Visa card of PayPal account. The service does not support options like MasterCard, American Express, Maestro, or Discover.

Sadly, users have lack of privacy for payments, as SurfEasy does not offer support for Bitcoin either. Based on my observation of the VPN, I would definitely like seeing an addition in the payment options supported. This can increase the reliability and versatility of the VPN, which can work tremendously in its favor i.e. attract more customers to pay and use their service.

SurfEasy VPN Apps Compatibility Review

Based on my SurfEasy review, the VPN supports a multiple of platforms, devices, and browsers. The provider has dedicated clients for Windows, Mac, and Amazon OS. In addition, they also offer applications for mobile devices like Android, iPhone, iPad. Unlike other providers, SurfEasy VPN also offers browser extensions for Chrome and Opera. The provider also has plans of introducing an add-on for Mozilla Firefox in the future.

SurfEasy VPN Browsers Extention for Opera And Chrome

In addition to its brilliant apps SurfEasy VPN also offers browser extensions for Opera and Google Chrome. The one click add-ons are not really VPN extensions but proxy servers that allow you to easily bypass geo-restrictions placed on video streaming and music services.

surfeasy vpn extensions review for chrome and opera

SurfEasy VPN Add-On for Mozilla Firefox Browser

SurfEasy VPN does not offer an add-on for Mozilla Firefox, but there are those for Google Chrome and Opera. The add-ons are available to download from their respective extensions stores. Strangely there is a SurfEasy VPN browser theme for some reason.

SurfEasy VPN Learning Center – Tutorials Provided

  1. Introduction to the SurfEasy Private Browser for Windows

Why Is My SurfEasy VPN Not Working?

So, your SurfEasy VPN is not working, no worries!

The ideal method to resolve the issue is by restarting your PC, if it’s a mobile device force stop the SurfEasy app. Windows users can also visit the support center and follow this troubleshooting manual to resolve the issue.

SurfEasy VPN Review of Protocols & Encryption

One aspect that surprised me while reviewing SurfEasy VPN was that the provider fails to mention any tunneling protocols in the features, security, blog, and support section. This absence of information is not only confusing but shady considering the website mentions AES-256 bit encryption in the features section.

The concerning reason is that if the service deploys the PPTP tunneling protocol, there is considerable evidence indicating that the NSA & Chinese Golden Shield Project has already cracked the PPTP protocol. I am still awaiting response for my query about tunneling protocols sent to support.

SurfEasy VPN Review of Logging & Privacy Policies

SurfEasy VPN claims to be a no logs provider. This means that the provider does not store any IP addresses, browsing, and download data. SurfEasy does collect and preserve some basic information when you use the service.

surfeasy vpn logs policy review

The following operational data is collected by SurfEasy:

  1. Aggregate bandwidth usage
  2. Temporary usage data
  3. The SurfEasy clients may use in-app analytics technologies, like Google Analytics
  4. SurfEasy is required to comply with law enforcement where subpoenas, warrants or other legal documents have been provided

But as attractive as the above looks the privacy policy documents informs later that:

“We may collect and disclose personal information, including your usage data, to governmental authorities or agencies, including law enforcement agencies, at their request or pursuant to a court order, subpoena or other legal process, if there is a good faith belief that such collection or disclosure is required by law.”

This basically means that SurfEasy is not a zero logs provider and retains massive amounts of data on its customers.

SurfEasy VPN Free Trial Package Review

SurfEasy VPN offers a limited feature free trial that allows you to test the service using a 500MB limit. You can also get additional 250MB data when you confirm your email address to them. You can download their Android, Windows, Mac or iOS app and sign up for free through the apps. You will also not be able to use their complete server network with the free trial.

During my SurfEasy VPN review, I signed up with the Android app free trial and it has worked well till now. I am still testing the stability of the apps to check if they crash or mess up.

Does SurfEasy VPN Really Works in China or It’s Just The Plain Lie?

Yes, SurfEasy VPN should work perfectly fine in China since it uses the OpenVPN protocol in its Windows and Android apps. China’s Great Firewall can only block the PPTP protocol till now, they can only slow down connections based on other tunneling protocols.

Reviewer’s Verdict

On top of the hood Surf Easy looks like a brilliant VPN service until you go under the fancy marketing.

First, SurfEasy is very expensive and the competition is offering better service bundles for half the price. It is however worth the money if you will use it for HD streaming, torrents and hosting servers. The speed is actually ultra-fast.

Second, SurfEasy VPN has no live support which is a great feature to have since most VPN users have no idea what they are doing. The email response time was excellent and I liked their prioritization even for meagre queries.

Third, SurfEasy VPN’s privacy policy is appalling it’s just not acceptable. After claiming that it logs nothing the provider claims that it willproviding authorities all your data in case there is a warrant which basically means they log in all your personal information and online activities.

Fourth, SurfEasy offers fewer protocols than the competition. The protocols that it does offer to tunnel VPN connections are actually the best that you can have but not good enough to stream video. 256bit AES encryption is the best you can have so ciphering is all good.

I hope you enjoyed my latest SurfEasy VPN review. I am positive the review will give you better insight of the provider and allow you to make a better choice when subscribing to VPN. 1. Michael Raymond says:

I used to think Opera’s VPN was good, but SurfEasy is definitely better. I guess its because Opera has been inspired by the software. Thanks for writing this detailed review, my opinion is pretty much the same

    • Admin says:

Thanks for sharing your experience Michael. Keep following us for more information regarding the best VPNs in the marketplace!

  2. Christine says:

I am not a tech genius and I tend to be quite dumb on understanding all this VPN limbo, but I must say SurfEasy has made my life easier. What do you think about its safety? Like can I really start downloading torrents freely?

    • Ameer says:

There is no doubt about the simplicity and ease-of-use SurfEasy offers! And sure go crazy with the VPN. You can download torrents. SurfEasy supports P2P/Torrenting and does not limit bandwidth. You will definitely have a good experience. However, make sure you only start downloading torrents, once the VPN is connected. Wouldn’t want you to get stuck with copyright hunters!

  3. Richard says:

my experience has been very good with surfeasy. stable apps dont crash, good speed on all servers even when i travel to other countries, support is slow but they help out and works with my netflix subscription, kudos!

  4. Jonah says:

Hi Ameer, im really interested in buying surfeasy but i have heard they are partners of opera browser, so will they be using my data to send me ads on mobile and my mac? they have all the servers i need and the price is decent. my friend is using the service he also commended the speed but i was wondering if they log my online habits?

    • admin says:

      Hi Jonah
yes the service is now owned by Opera Inc. I looked them up a long time ago and they have servers in 3 continents so depends where you are located. If you are in the USA they will log your data in accordance to local laws. They do mention in the privacy policy that IP addresses are never logged but they log the data you use on their network.
Performance wise it is a very good service and you should try it out if you require it for streaming and routine browsing. The price is decent so a great buy. Also try out NordVPN better server network, and we have an excellent exclusive 2 year deal for it.

  5. adi says:

I was quite satisfied with surfeasy mostly because of its price, and it offered all servers I needed. NNot into torrents, but needed something fast for kodi mobile and online streaming on PC so the UK, and USA servers were quite capable and I was surprised that not too much speed was lost also. I also tested the service with wireshark like this website mentions in a guide and it was nice to know that everything was encrypted going out of my pc. Support is not very active but I was happy they got back and helped me with setting up the service with an extra router. All in all, a good fast vpn service to use for streaming and browsing.

  6. Christopher Curlott says:

I can not say enough good things about SurfEasy. It is top notch on all fronts. I have unlimited membership because I know a winner when I see one. Big hats to the good guys! My router is a little old and not supported by windows10 or my security software so I have been working with my fingers crossed. Got SurfEasy and my internet connection is encrypted every time I log on. Their servers have not dropped me yet. There is a little and just a little lag time in the surf but for the security deliverd and my security software puts my mind at ease. It’s real nice, so come on in out of the storm.
