Introduction – SlickVPN

Welcome to our slickvpn review where we analyze the provider’s featured services and compare it to the market. In the sections that follow we will predominantly discuss SlickVPN pricing, servers, apps, privacy policies, compatibility amongst other features.

SlickVPN is a USA based privacy provider that began operations back in 2011, making it a fairly new player in VPN industry.

Slickvpn Unique Selling Proposition

SlickVPN markets its services as a privacy provider rather than an unblocking service to streaming geo-restricted entertainment. The website mentions on the front page that provider protects your privacy ensuring your connection cannot be monitored, throttled and buffered.

After careful review I found SlickVPN’s hydra technology to be its unique selling feature. The Hydra Protection feature achieves highest level of privacy & anonymity by routing your online traffic through multiple servers of SlickVPN’s network.

SlickVPN Pricing and Account Subscription Review

SlickVPN currently offers four variable pricing plans including:

  1. Yearly – $4 per month (one time $48 payment charged every 12 months)
  2. Monthly – $10 per month
  3. 3 Months – $6.67 per month (one time $20 payment charged every 3 months)
  4. 6 Months – $5 per month (one time $30 payment charged every 12 months)

All subscriptions come with the full SlickVPN feature bundle offering you:

  1. Servers across 35 countries
  2. 5 Simultaneous device connections
  3. Choice between 128bit & 256bit bank grade encryption
  4. 30 Days Money Back Guarantee
  5. P2P & Torrent Optimized servers with unlimited downloads
  6. Chance to win amazing prizes with the #SlickVPNSwag program every month
  7. PPTP, OpenVPN and IPSec tunneling protocols
  8. Compatibility with Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Routers, Chromebook and Linux devices

Subscribing to SlickVPN is simple, it requires you to provide an email address and your payment information. The email doesn’t necessarily have to be your real one, a pseudo will do the job. You can sign up to the service from the subscription pricing page from the main navigation. You can also use discount coupons routinely available through deal websites or checkout our slickvpn review coupons section.

How to Cancel SlickVPN

Cancelling SlickVPN is simple and can be done by logging into your members’ area and going to the cancellation page. All requests to cancel your subscription must be made by the end of the month, quarter or year of duration. Please note that the provider clearly mentions that “Attempts to cancel the account via email or written notice or in any other manner other than that which is outlined in this section will be considered void”.

Process your cancellation through the website members’ area, don’t email customer support otherwise the account will stay active and recurring payments will be charged.

How to Setup/Configure SlickVPN OpenVPN

In case you opt to use SlickVPN’s OpenVPN service, you can configure the service in two ways. You can either:

  1. Download SlickVPN’s OpenVPN client
  2. Download OVPN configuration files and use with a 3rd party OpenVPN client

SlickVPN’s OpenVPN client is available on the official website and can be downloaded here. SlickVPN’s signature OpenVPN mod is pre-configured with all servers and all it requires is your credentials to connect. Similarly, you can download SlickVPN’s OVPN configuration files and use them over a 3rd party OpenVPN client likeS ecurePoint or Viscosity. OVPN Config files can also be downloaded from SlickVPN’s official website, in the tutorials area.

You can configure SlickVPN OpenVPN services by following the provider’s official guide here.

SlickVPN Not Connecting Error & Login Disconnecting Issue

Reported in older reviews of SlickVPN, customers have complained about disconnections and connection errors when they attempt to connect to the service. I browsed through the SlickVPN FAQ &support section but found no literature to correct the issues.

In my experience both as a VPN user and a reviewer, there are four possible steps you can take troubleshoot disconnections &connection errors:

  1. Consider connecting to one of your nearest locations, if issues persist then it’s probably time to contact the provider’s support
  2. Change the tunneling protocol you are using. Some ISPs tend to block popular protocols like PPTP and SSTP.
  3. Change your DNS, instead of using the default ISP DNS consider using one provided by your VPN provider.
  4. Connect and test your VPN service over a different network than your home. If the problem persists it’s time to contact SlickVPN support for a detailed support sessions to fix the issue.

SlickVPN CORE review

SlickVPN CORE is the provider’s basic VPN subscription package specifically designed for travelers who wish to keep their devices and personal information secure on the go. SlickVPN launched CORE as an affordable plan that provides the same top tier security and best premium locations available to connect through.

SlickVPN’s CORE plan is currently available for $8.33 per month or a super lifetime deal of $29exclusively available on StackSocial. The CORE package allows you to sign up for 4, 8, 12, 16, &20 days for $0.75/day, if you require the VPN service for a limited time. SlickVPN CORE comes with all premium features, but provides 11 or 46 premium locations available from the provider.

  3. Best Promotional Codes
  4. Copy Promo Code

How Can I Use SlickVPN?

To use SlickVPN you will be required to sign up to one of its four plans depending on how long you will require the VPN service. Once subscribed, login to the service on the official website where you can download the desktop apps or configure SlickVPN manually on your devices.

SlickVPN Servers List Review

When it comes to server coverage, SlickVPN offers a massive global footprint with servers from the Americas to the end of South East Asia. SlickVPN offers 87 servers across 35 countries with popular locations including USA, Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Australia.

SlickVPN works brilliantly with geo-restricted streaming services including Netflix, HBO, HULU and many others guaranteeing first time access and no IP leaks. SlickVPN does not support torrents & P2P filesharing since it complies with DMCA and copyright infringement laws. Since the provider is based in the USA it is essential for the provider to keep track of your torrent activities.

SlickVPN DNS Server Review

Yes, SlickVPN offers a SmartDNS service which has been rebranded as “DNSEraser”. Details for DNSEraser are unavailable because the provider is probably changing the look and content of the page with new features and pricing being updated. We will hopefully update as soon as the page come back online.

SlickVPN Review for Netflix

SlickVPN offers 26 servers across the United States to give you instant access to the Netflix US library. The provider offers both PPTP (recommended for streaming) and OpenVPN to bypass any active firewalls or restrictions. In our slickvpn review, We tested out different servers for netflix but only California Server worked it out.

Slick VPN Support Review

Slick VPN offers help and support through two channels:

  1. Website FAQ section
  2. Contact Us section

The website FAQ contains all relevant troubleshooting guides, configuration tutorials for all compatible devices and account issue resolution information. Manuals & guides have been neatly arranged by Operating System and are very well written to make sense for beginners.

The contact us section is basically a feedback page but can also be used as a means to contact the technical support team. The response time mentioned on the page claims contact in 24 hours of sending the query. I found SlickVPN support very poorly managed and even after 3 years of operations the brand hasn’t considered a live chat service for instant customer support. The FAQ section however is brilliant with excellent illustrated guides & tutorials to setup the service in addition to answers for most service related queries.

SlickVPN Payment Methods Review

SlickVPN offers 3 vendor to subscribe to its services which I assume are plenty for a VPN provider. Payment methods include:

  1. PayPal
  2. Credit Card
  3. Bitcoin

SlickVPN Compatibility Review

SlickVPN is a very compatible service and works with an array of Operating Systems & Devices including:

  1. Windows
  2. Mac
  3. Android
  4. iOS (iPhone & iPad)
  5. Linux
  6. Routers
  7. Chromebook

How to Download SlickVPN Client Apps

After careful review of SlickVPN’s website I noticed that the provider offers desktop clients for Windows and Mac OSx only. Software for both devices were recently updated and can be downloaded from here.

SlickVPN on Android

Unfortunately, SlickVPN does not offer any apps for Android devices and hence you must manually configure the service using either the PPTP protocol or install the OpenVPN client to use the OVPN configuration files available in the websites Help & Support section.

To setup SlickVPN PPTP on Android devices follow our simple guide:

  1. Go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > More > VPN
  2. Find VPN menu and tap “Add VPN Network” or the “+” sign (whichever is available)
  3. In provided section, add the following information
    1. Name: SlickVPN
    2. Type: PPTP
    3. Server Address: (Request SlickVPN support for list of server addresses)
    4. Check PPP Encryption (MPPE)
    5. Tap ‘Save’
  4. You will now see the Slick VPN icon in the VPN menu, Tap it…
    1. Enter Username & Password
  5. Click connect and Slick VPN should connect
  6. Click allow if a message comes up asking to give permission to Slick VPN

SlickVPN on iOS

Like Android you will be required to manually setup SlickVPN on iOS devices including iPhone and iPad devices. To setup SlickVPN on iOS, follow our step by step guide below:

  1. Tap Settings > General > VPN
  2. Find VPN Menu and tap “Add VPN Configuration”
  3. Tap ‘Type’ and change protocol to IPSec
  4. Fill out the following settings next
    1. Description: SlickVPN
    2. Server: Request provider for server address list
    3. Account: Enter your SlickVPN username
    4. Password: Enter password for SlickVPN
    5. Secret: Enter “gogoVPN”
  5. Click Done on the top right to save your VPN connection
  6. You will be taken back to the VPN Menu with Slick VPN, tap the name to connect

SlickVPN on iPad

You can setup SlickVPN on the iPad by following the same guide as the Apple iPhone above.

SlickVPN on Linux Ubuntu

SlickVPN offers a dedicated guide for Linux Ubuntu users and is available in their support section with complete illustrated steps. You can find all guides for Linux here.

Slick VPN Tunneling Protocols & Encryption Review

Tunneling protocols are a big deal these days when it comes to VPN providers since most people either wish to unblock geo-restricted streaming services and download torrents anonymously. In my opinion, the three tunneling protocols that Slick VPN offers are enough to get the job done. Currently the brand offers tunneling protocols including:

  1. PPTP with 128 bit MPPE encryption
  2. OpenVPN with 128bit/256bit encryption
  3. IPSec with 128bit encryption

You can find out more about the three protocols, how they work and what to use them for on the dedicated SlickVPN protocols page.

SlickVPN Logging and Privacy Policy Review

As a zero logging provider SlickVPN requires nothing more than your email address to register an account. The privacy policy indicates that the following unidentifiable data is gathered when you use SlickVPN:

  1. email
  2. Username/Password
  3. Apache Webserver Data
  4. Payment Data necessary to manage subscriptions, payments, and cancellations
  5. Any emails sent to our service
  6. Google analytics data to help market our product
  7. Temporary cookies to manage members area login
  8. SlickVPN collects certain information automatically from visitors to the site which includes the IP address and which pages are viewed on the site

After reading through privacy policy I can assure you SlickVPN is not a zero logs provider. But the provider does establish that “…user activities outside of the SlickVPN site are not tracked nor do we track the browsing activities of user who are logged to the SlickVPN service.” SlickVPN also mentions in the privacy policy that all user data is processed within the USA which basically means the NSA already has all your data once you have created and account on their website.

Slick VPN Free Trial Review

SlickVPN does not offer a free trial, but the  app does offer a 30 Days Refund Guarantee. There are no stern clauses you have to meet for the refund, just ensure not to do something illegal with it.

SlickVPN Comparisons With Different VPN Services

SlickVPN vs. Private Internet Access

We compared PIA VPN with SlickVPN and found that there is much difference between the two services when it comes to server coverage, pricing, compatibility, and tunneling protocols provided. Although both services claim being zero logs providers, they log user IP addresses. Below is a head to head comparison of both services:

FeatureSlickVPNPIA VPN
Pricing (Yearly)$48$39.95
3. Socks5 Proxy
Encryption128bit & 256bit128bit & 256bit
7.Media Boxes

SlickVPN vs PureVPN

In comparison to PureVPN (one of the oldest VPN providers), SlickVPN seems to fade away. The massive variety of features from PureVPN seems to overshadow each and every feature of the USA based privacy service.Following is a head to head showdown between SlickVPN & PureVPN:

Pricing (Yearly)$48$79.9(**5 Year BVP Special Deal**)
Pricing (Yearly)$48$79.9(**5Year BVPSpecial Deal**)
ProtocolsPPTP, OpenVPN, IPSecOpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP,SSTP, iKEV2, Stealth Protocol
EncryptionAES128bit & AES256bitAES-128 CBC mode, AES-256 CBC mode Blowfish & Blowfish (128bit) CBC mode
LogsYesNo! But collects data to deliver browser ads
Torrents & P2P AllowedYesYes
Proxy ServersYesYes
Simultaneous users55
Added FeaturesNoneAd-blocker, Split Tunneling

PureVPN being part of the VPN industry for over 10 years now has much more to offer in comparison to SlickVPN. The biggest difference is between the privacy policies of both services, PureVPN is not bound to retain anything from cookie data (if you opt out) to connection time stamps courtesy of Hong Kong privacy laws. Similarly, SlickVPN retains a major chunk of ‘identifiable’ user data.

One aspect where PureVPN completely loses out is server connectivity and speed. PureVPN apps have been criticized of being buggy where erratic bandwidth spikes, app crashes, failure to connect and unreliable speeds have been reported by users. I experienced the same, but found that configuring the service manually can mitigate the disconnection issues. SlickVPN servers deliver high speed and stable connectivity. Something I have tested and found quite convincing.

Then again, SlickVPNstill offers limited privacy feature compared to PureVPN when it comes to tunneling protocols, device compatibility, business services, proxy servers, and their signature privacy tech (internet kill switch, ad blocker, malware blocker, DDoS protection, split tunneling etc.). As with the case in the previous comparison, PureVPN is great value for money due to its ridiculously attractive price tag, while SlickVPN is a great option for those who wish to stream video & TV channels live.

SlickVPN vs TORGuard

I compared SlickVPN with an older more established brand,TORGuard,to determine just how attractive the service is in contrast to other providers. One crucial aspect that I did not compare are the speed tests, primarily because there can be significant differences in performance depending on where you are based. Following is a comparison of 10 common features of both privacy providers:

Pricing (Yearly)$48$59.99
ProtocolsPPTP, OpenVPN, IPSecOpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP
EncryptionAES128bit & AES256bitAES-128 CBC mode, AES-256 CBC Blowfish
LogsYesNo! But collects data to deliver browser ads
Torrents & P2P AllowedYesYes
Proxy ServersYesYes
Simultaneous users55

There are some aspects that I notice are confusing, for instance, TORGuard claims 1600+ servers across 52 countries but I could only identify 37 countries on their VPN locations page. Unfortunately, 15 countries and a large number of advertised TORGuard servers are proxy servers primarily meant to unblocking streaming services &general websites, they have no encryption.

Then there is the notion that both providers are USA based, something that we constantly point out to users. Always consider using a non-US based VPN provider, since there is no guarantee what data is being compromised without user consent. Remember that VPN providers can also sell unidentifiable user data for profit just like ISPs.

I would say both providers are evenly priced for the features that they offer. SlickVPN being more attractive due to itscurrently limited server coverage, but what it lacks in feature diversity the brand makes up in other areas. Both brands offer great cross platform compatibility so are usable over Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Linux.

Both providers offer torrent & P2P support and offer multiple connectivity so you can stay secure everywhere on all your devices. TORGuard does come out the better service when it comes to value for money with its 24/7 customer support, free proxy servers and signature Stealth VPN service.

SlickVPN vs IPVanish

Upon comparing SlickVPN with IPVanish, it is not very difficult to figure out which service offers better compatibility, reliability, and security. IPVanish, undoubtedly, provides customers with more privacy, server locations, and features.

With its huge collection of 750+ servers expanding across 60+ countries, IPVanish offers plenty of connectivity capabilities to consumers from all over the world. The service uses 256-bit AES encryption with RSA 2048 for handshaking and SHA-256 for authentication.

This gives IPVanish greater supremacy over SlickVPN, which is visible in the detailed overview below:

Pricing (Yearly)$48$77.99
ProtocolsPPTP, OpenVPN, IPSecPPTP, OpenVPN and L2TP
EncryptionAES-128bit & AES-256bitAES-256 Bit
Torrents & P2P AllowedYesYes
Proxy ServersYesYes
Simultaneous Users55
Added FeaturesNoneNAT Firewall, Kill Switch, and DNS Leak Protection

When you add these encryption features to the zero logs policy, you gain better overall security and anonymity, as compared to SlickVPN.No logs means that you leverage the utmost level of privacy. This saves you from aggressive marketing firms and governmental agencies that might want to track and steal your data.

IPVanish’s SOCKS5 proxy introduction further promotes better security over proxy servers, which is not available with SlickVPN. SOCKS5 is an extension of the SOCKS protocol. It uses advanced network technologies, like IPv6 and UDP, which allow you to create a highly secure proxy service.

SlickVPN also lacks NAT Firewall, Kill Switch, and DNS Leak Protection, all of which are present in IPVanish. The DNS leak protection guarantees there is zero leakage of DNS requests (a common problem that results in the accidental release of a user’s identity and location).

The Kill Switch is a feature that disables your internet connection, if the VPN times out or disconnects. This crucial addition to IPVanish helps in ensuring that not even a fragment of information relating to your location and identity gets stored on any website.

The NAT firewall offers added protection when connected to a VPN. This feature in IPVanish blocks unwanted incoming traffic for security against external threats, especially DDoS attacks. It is a handy tool for online gaming enthusiasts, as it prevents DDoS threats from disrupting the gameplay.

In terms of pricing, SlickVPN is definitely more budget-friendly, but lacks vital security and privacy features. The pricing of IPVanish is higher. However, you get to leverage extra security features and 750+ servers. The only issue with both providers is that they are USA-based.

Most users will not feel comfortable using providers that are US-based. This is because data is underrisk of tracking and tampering, without user consent. SlickVPN even stores and logs IP addresses. This makes it a risky choice, as all your internet activity is traceable back to the IP.

Both providers grant access to VPN connections on five devices simultaneously. You can also leverage P2P/Torrenting to enjoy the best downloading experience.

SlickVPN vs Ivacy

SlickVPN works well in protecting user privacy, when bypassing internet censorship. It offers perfect speeds for daily streaming, browsing, and downloading activities, while offering smooth connectivity on multiple devices simultaneously. However, when compared to Ivacy, it does tend to fall short in a number of crucial aspects.

In terms of pricing, Ivacy definitely manages to take the cake. You can purchase a yearly plan for $24.5, which is half of what SlickVPN is charging. For the lower price, you leverage more network capability. Ivacy has 200+ servers in more than 100 countries.

This gives you more options for connecting to different locations around the world, as compared to the limited network of 35 countries available with SlickVPN. Both providers use AES-256 Bit encryption and support OpenVPN (TCP and UDP), L2TP-IPsec, and PPTP protocols. This is noticeable in the in-depth comparison below:

Pricing (Yearly)$48$24.5
ProtocolsPPTP, OpenVPN, IPSecOpenVPN, L2TP-IPsec, and PPTP
EncryptionAES-128bit & AES-256bitAES-256 Bit
Torrents & P2P AllowedYesYes
Based InUSAHongkong
Proxy ServersYesYes
Simultaneous Users55
Added FeaturesNoneSplit Tunneling, Secure DNS, IPv6 Leak Protection

You can also take advantage of P2P file sharing/torrenting with complete privacy usingSlickVPN and Ivacy. However, the latter gains an upper hand in offering better security and anonymity than SlickVPN – thanks to its no logs policy.

Where SlickVPN stores IP addresses and other crucial identity information, Ivacy allows you to explore new horizonsfearlessly, as it does not log any user data when connected to its VPN. Based in Hong Kong, Ivacy again, gains an edge over SlickVPN.

Unlike USA and other countries, Hong Kong does not impose any strict data retention laws currently. This further elaborates on how safe your internet browsing experience will be when using Ivacy, as compared to the USA-based competitor, which has some of the most stringent internet laws in the world.

SlickVPN also lacks Split Tunneling, IPv6 Leak Protection, and Secure DNS, all of which are available in Ivacy. The IPv6 leak protection helps in protecting you from external threats and potential leaks by forcing all IPv6 traffic into the VPN, ensuring all your information remains safe.

The Secure DNS add-on proves useful in routing your requests through a DNS server operated by Ivacy. This reduces the chances of any sort of data leak, which could risk exposing your information to unauthoritative sources.

The Split Tunneling feature helps in splitting and prioritizing data traffic. It comes in use for routing the less vital stuff without VPN cover, and official data through the VPN tunnel. Ivacy also offers Kill Switch, which shuts down all online activities, upon disconnecting from the VPN.

Reviewer’s Verdict

After my conclusive SlickVPN review, I found the service provider to have a very attractive service bundle. For their excellent logging policy and overall service features we rank the service a very attractive 3.5 out of 5.

The first aspect I loved was their server coverage in the most popular locations across Europe and the United States. The Hydra feature is a very attractive prospect for those looking to torrent anonymously with SlickVPN.

Another interesting feature I identified in our SlickVPN review was the provider’s excellent pricing, something very rare amongst premium VPN providers. Pricing is very competitive and is one of the major factors allowing SlickVPN to compete with the industry, even though it’s a new brand. The 30 days refund guarantee is also a great plus for the brand since most provider offer 7 days at most, while some don’t even offer that.

SlickVPN’s support review did reveal that customer support services are quite average compared to other providers of the industry. There should at least be a live chat service to assist subscribers and answer pre sales questions without waiting for up to 24 hours.

Compatibility was something I liked after reviewing SlickVPN. They ensures compatibility & support for a huge range of devices. This is made possible by offering two common tunneling protocols available over popular devices & operating systems.

The privacy policy is appalling as with any other USA based VPN provider. It’s not really a disadvantage attributed to SlickVPN but the silly cyber security laws governing the United States. Logging IP addresses and retaining this data doesn’t really make a brand a privacy provider.
