PureVPN Quick Review

Established in 2007 and founded by GZ-systems, PureVPN is a Hong Kong-based provider, which ranks among the very first premium VPN services to make its entry into the marketplace. The service has grown considerably since then, introducing various add-ons and features including Kill Switch and NAT Firewall.

The platform supports all popular protocols like OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP/IPSec. It also comes equipped with split tunneling, IPv6 protection, and DNS leak protection, while offering a network of more than 750 servers spread across 180 locations worldwide in 140 countries. PureVPN Reviews on Reddit

Our review of PureVPN showed that it has a strong presence on Reddit with an official r/AskPureVPN/ Reddit thread committed to providing subscribers’ updates, news, support, and other crucial information. After PureVPN’s email server was hacked and a hoax email was sent to customers informing that the service was closing down, PureVPN maintains a strong presence on the social forum to counter any issues.

PureVPN Reviews on Reddit

There is a general complaint by numerous users over the last year about speed issues, and one we uncovered during PureVPN review. Random speed drops, disconnections and lagging video was reported multiple times. After a chat with PureVPN support I was able to establish that the brand is relentlessly working to improve their server infrastructure.

Review of PureVPN on reddit

Historically PureVPN haven’t had a great record when it comes to refunds and server speeds. Over time I have noticed they have improved services, upgraded apps, added servers, relaxed requirements for refunds and significantly improved customer support. In accordance to my testing during PureVPN reviews, the brand offers very good torrent download speeds (but only during off peak hours).

One thing I really have to commend PureVPN is for their tireless work for privacy rights and regular reporting of online privacy issues. Pure offers an amazing privacy policies, ensuring a “Zero Tolerance – Zero Logs Policy”, so no matter what you do it will not be logged or have a history.  I would caution users however not to believe all the comments & reviews posted to Reddit.

A large number of PureVPN reviews were absolutely faked by competitors to market their own service. SO be very careful, not all reviews are either true or even legitimate, this is the case for most prominent VPN providers.
You can also compare PureVPN with other providers in our exclusive Reddit VPN survey with real time reviews from PureVPN users.

PureVPN Reviews on Twitter

Twitter contains a long line of PureVPN reviews available from partners’ or actual subscribers who have used the service. Not an ideal place to get a realistic review of PureVPN, but still gives you a massive selection of actual user PureVPN reviews to choose from. Most reviews you will notice are over online publications including prominent ones like IGN.

The brand has a strong presence on Twitter with an official account to communicate with subscribers and prospect users. While conducting review of PureVPN showed that it also offer dedicated support over Twitter in case you ever request them. The reviews that users have submitted over Twitter are really impressed with the 1+1 deal that offers 1 year of service free when you buy the yearly PureVPN plan.

A brilliant aspect I saw apart from the marketing jargon was PureVPN’s activity, mostly related to educating users online about children’s privacy, dangerous smart devices, cybersecurity tips and more.

PureVPN Android Apps Reviews on Google Play

Google Play offers most realistic reviews of both PureVPN’s services and apps. There are some comments that you will notice are spammed but still there is mixed sentiment for the brand. PureVPN has had some connectivity issues and bugs in their apps historically, while new versions are available with bug fixes, connectivity issues remains due to their massive user base.

PureVPN Android Apps Reviews on Google Play

I did notice during PureVPN review that their social teams are quite active to respond to complaints and queries over Google Play. The mixed reviews do indicate that PureVPN is a decent brand to use when it’s not messing up connectivity, but the brand must address the issue permanently. The Android app is frequently updated and PureVPN’s social media teams are active to support subscribers with app issues.

PureVPN iOS App Reviews on Apple iTunes

On the iTunes app store, I could only find 3 reviews for the new PureVPN app. There are no mixed sentiments that I see for the PureVPN iOS app, the reviews are quite ordinary. While one user has solely rated the service and app 5 star for its lifetime deal, another has clearly reviewed the app as “not good” for iOS devices. The old PureVPN iOS app users have commented that connectivity over the new app has improved.

PureVPN iOS App Reviews on Apple iTunes

One thing I can associate with is the constant disconnections while using PureVPN app. And once that happens it makes you wait for connecting to another server. The app has officially made it past Apple Inc.’s quality check, but still under performs compared to its Mac & Windows counterpart. Since the number of PureVPN reviews on the Apple iTunes store aren’t enough my evaluation of user feedback still remains inconclusive for PureVPN iOS apps.

Unique Features

During our PureVPN review process, three features really stood out that we consider unique competencies; those being exclusive Torrent servers, Split Tunneling features and the internet kill-switch.

Torrent Supported Servers

PureVPN hosts exclusive turbo speed servers for torrent downloads, allowing users from all over the world to securely use torrents without worrying about DMCA notices & copyright monitoring via suspicious trackers.

Split Tunneling

Split Tunneling is a networking term used when a user can access two different domains at the same time. This simply means that users can access the public internet and a restricted private network at the same time.

Once the user connects using the PureVPN app and turns on the Split Tunneling feature, all requests for Google services & Facebook etc. will now pass through the ISP domain, activities like online banking, Netflix and uTorrent will pass through the secure VPN server domain. This ensures that all your online banking will be highly secured, allowing no one to access this activity. Benefits of PureVPN’s Split Tunneling include:

  • Reduced overall bandwidth consumption
  • Latency intensive apps will run better
  • Better overall network performance

Internet Kill-Switch

Possibly one of the most essential features of PureVPN’s Windows app is its “Internet Kill Switch”. This feature was added to counter the sudden connection failures sometimes experienced by VPN apps.

Pure VPN Split Tunneling

In countries like the US, Saudi Arabia, UK, Germany, Turkey, Australia and a few others being exposed due to a VPN disconnection can be very costly. In case your VPN connection drops, [highlight]PureVPN’s Internet Kill Switch disconnects all internet traffic and stops all online activities ensuring no one can notice you while you are unsecured.

PureVPN App Blocker Review

With kids engaging in digital devices more than ever, it has become incredibly crucial for parents to monitor their children’s activity on smartphones, tablets, etc. You would not want your kids to dig somewhere they should not or see inappropriate content.

This is where PureVPN’s app blocker feature makes its entry, which comes pre-installed. Simply select the app you want to block within the app and you will be good to go. Once apps are blocked, your kid will not be able to access it. Here is how you can activate the app blocker feature.

PureVPN Subscription Plans & Pricing

Our review of PureVPN unveiled that the service offers three affordable packages, with all three pricing plans offering complete service features. Pricing plans are as follows:

  • 1 Month Plan offered for $10.95/month
  • 12 Months Plan at $4.91/month
  • 24 Months plan for $2.87/month

While the monthly and 6 month plans are great for prospect users’ who have time limited requirements, the 36 months plan is not only a best seller but also the ideal choice for those looking for complete privacy & data security in the long run.

Accepted Payment Methods For PureVPN

PureVPN accepts a wide variety of payment merchants to accommodate prospect subscribers from around the world. After contacting their marketing team, we concluded that the brand actually pays immense attention to their customer reviews. PureVPN accepts payment through the following merchants:

  • PayPal
  • PaymentWall
  • BitCoin
  • AliPay
  • Cashu
  • Gift Cards

The provider also accepts payments through more than 10 Gift Card merchants.

PureVPN Business VPN Review

It helps your employees become virtual citizens of any country, keeping their data secure in private or public areas. PureVPN Servers Review

PureVPN offers over 750 high speed servers in 140+ countries. Servers have been placed in all seven continents allowing subscribers to browse the internet without facing any online geo-restrictions. The website offers the following server statistics and a detailed Pure VPN review of servers:

PureVPN Servers Review

Speed Tests of PureVPN’s Servers

While reviewing PureVPN we tested five different servers using Ookla’s flash based Broadband Speed Test. We tried 3 servers each from the USA, UK, Netherlands, France & Germany. From each region’s tests we picked out the best one. The high ping recorded from the US servers is largely due to distance from our location.

PureVPN’s Protocols & Encryption In Review

PureVPN offers 6 different tunneling protocols including full support for OpenVPN to secure user activities:

  • PPTP
  • SSTP
  • OpenVPN
  • IKEV2
  • L2TP
  • Stealth Protocol (Latest)

Usually, you will find providers offering up to 3 or 4 tunneling protocols. The provider offers an arsenal of tunneling technologies to address the differing needs of subscribers. For instance, those who want to securely connect to business servers can use the L2TP/IPSec protocol while streaming fans can use PPTP blazing fast speeds. We also noted that both 128bit and 256bit data encryption were used depending on which tunneling protocol you connected through.

Apps & Compatibility Review

With strong support for over 50 different devices and 8 different operating systems, PureVPN offers dedicated apps for Windows, Linux, Mac OSx on their website; plus mobile apps which are available on the Google Play & Apple stores.

Speaking of Linux OS and its distros… Subscribers can either manually configure the service using the illustrated step by step guide available on PureVPN’s website knowledge base or simply install the OpenVPN client to get all servers in one place.

PureVPN Apps and Compatibility

Also available on the support section of the website are a number of guides to configuring the VPN service on a range of routers, gaming consoles, and streaming boxes to ensure none of your devices are left unsecured.

The Windows App

Released in September 2015, the PureVPN Windows Dialer is an upgrade to the previous slower application. The new PureVPN Windows application now offers:

  1. A new improved & attractive User Interface
  2. 2 new Privacy Modes to make PureVPN easier to use
  3. A sleeker simpler design
  4. New dashboard
  5. Upgraded servers list
  6. Faster app connectivity

PureVPN Windows 10

Using PureVPN On Windows 10

You may experience some functionality issues since the PureVPN Windows 10 app is in its Beta test stages. We recommend setting up the VPN connection manually until the Win10 version is out of beta.

PureVPN’s Android App

The last time we reviewed PureVPN we noted that the Android version was the step child that dearly needed a total makeover. Poor connectivity, disconnections, poor security and frequent crashes were all part of the PureVPN Android app. The latest release of PureVPN for Android has now been optimized to work with Android Nougat and like its family members is now sleeker and simpler to use. Other new updates to the Pure VPN Android app include:

  • Support in Arabic, Turkish, Spanish and Chinese languages
  • Marking Favorite servers while connecting
  • FAQ Integration into the app
  • A new re-designed purchase screen with the addition of the 6 months Package
  • Auto-connect VPN when on untrusted & unsecure public Wi-Fi networks
  • Auto connect option on mobile phone reboot
  • Android Widget
  • Internet Kill switch feature
  • Mode screen changed
  • Multi-Port Tunneling

The first thing that I noticed with the Android app was its stability and no server disconnections. Although it did disconnect after 45 minutes, the new PureVPN Android app has not crashed on my device yet. The Android app also navigates faster without previous animation glitches.

PureVPN’s Mac App

Another caveat from our last review of PureVPN was the Mac app, which wasn’t exactly very functional with the latest updates to the OS. Thankfully, the newly revamped Mac app now comes with a sleek interface for both dashboard and the Settings menu, plus it is now fully compatible with Mac OSx Sierra or newer.

Other major changes include the FAQ Integration into the Mac app allowing users to immediately get solutions to their issues or guides to understand the app better. The new release also makes the app easier to navigate and go around for new subscribers. New purpose icons and a new privacy mode have been added to the app allowing you to use automatic configuration if uncertain.

One feature that I did miss in PureVPN’s Mac app was the Connect/Disconnect option in the status bar, this has now been included for instant notifications. Possibly the best option added to the upgraded Mac app is the Stealth VPN protocols for Mac users. This not only enhances their privacy but doubles the security of data using two VPN protocols & encryption rather than one. The PureVPN Mac app is now available on the official website. The new PureVPN Mac app offers:

  •  SSTP tunneling protocol for safer browsing, streaming, and torrent downloading
  •  Added language support in Dutch, German and French
  •  Military Grade 256bit encryption for all connections
  •  Improved and faster user interface

One of the best things about PureVPN is that it covers all basis in terms of apps compatibility. You can even setup the VPN on your DD-WRT router by following the steps here. As a second option, users can purchase a PureVPN configured FlashRouter too. This rids the hassle of setting up the VPN.

PureVPN’s Customer Support

When reviewing PureVPN’s customer support we found their support staff to be among the best. Our PureVPN review gives full marks to the provider’s excellent customer support and defines them in three phrases courteous, technically sound and always available.
PureVPN Customer Support

Support services are offered through three channels, namely:

  1. 24/7 on-site Live Chat
  2. Support Tickets , and
  3. On-site FAQ & Knowledge base

For the credibility of our Pure VPN review, we proceeded to test all available support channels and found none of them lacking. The live chat option was simply top-notch, not only did we get attention and time but also a complete solution of a DNS leak problem we came across.

Logs and Privacy Policy

If the provider’s uncompromising tunneling & encryption wasn’t enough, PureVPN is an Absolutely Zero Logs provider supported by the lenient privacy laws of Hong Kong. User logs are scrapped every 24 hours off PureVPN servers, providing subscribers “complete anonymity online”. Do remember that connection times are logged and kept to provide customer support.

Registration information required for PureVPN includes:

  1. Name
  2. Email Address, and
  3. Phone Number (for select few countries)

According to PureVPN’s privacy policy this information is only used to:

  • Resend login credentials
  • Update subscribers on policies
  • Inform customers about industry developments
  • Inform customers of discounts & special offers

During our PureVPN review, we tested the provider’s claims of retaining no logs by downloading terabytes of copyright material and never received a notice from the ISP.

Frequently Asked Questions About PureVPN

Q: Does PureVPN Work With KODI Media Player?

A: Gaining great fame in the past few years is the brilliant KODI media player now available for all major operating systems including Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android plus many other streaming devices. PureVPN does not offer a dedicated add-on for Kodi but can be used like Kodi VPN to unblock channels from US, UK, Germany, Italy, France and many other European countries.

Q: How do I Install PureVPN on Kodi (XBMC)?

A: Kodi operates on OpenVPN port 1194, therefore, you should configure OpenVPN first. To configure OpenVPN, you will have to change the .ovpn configuration file and use WinSCP. Here is a simple guide on how to setup PureVPN on OpenELEC/XBMC/Kodi:

  • First of all download WinSCP and OpenVPN files
  • Create a new text file pass.txt on your desktop and mention VPN username along with password
  • Make sure you provide Username in the first line while Password in the second line

Q: Does PureVPN Work In China?

A: PureVPN is among the very few providers who still host servers within mainland China. In addition, it is also one of the few providers that offer online privacy services to Chinese netizens. After a complete ban on western-based social networks and news resources, it is impossible to bypass the Chinese government’s Golden Shield Project.

PureVPN is one of the few providers who still challenge the Great Firewall of China and still provides Chinese internet users’ online freedom and anonymity. Currently, there are 3 major servers based within China that netizens can use to secure their IP address and location:

  1. Shanghai
  2. Beijing
  3. Guangdong

Each server accommodates 120 IP addresses and all are shared IPs too, so no chance of getting pointed out by the Chinese internet police. The provider offers servers in Hong Kong (2 servers in Fanling & Hong Kong city) and Taiwan (2 servers in Taipei & Taoyuan) for Chinese netizens to use to bypass the Great Firewall. Do remember that not all server & tunneling protocols will work fast in China; trial and error is the way to go. Read our best vpn for china guide.

Check out the servers section of this PureVPN review for server addresses and setup.

A: PureVPN offers super speed streaming servers to stream live TV, movies and TV shows from around the world. However, the service currently does not unblock the US version of Netflix according to our tests. We have reached out to their support to ask if there are any possible solutions for Netflix streaming in the future and will update with their response.

In spite of this, PureVPN is still an excellent choice for subscribers of HBO Now, NowTV, SkyTV, HULU, ESPN, NBC, BBC iPlayer and many other streaming services from around the world.

Avoid them, refund policy is completely lie!
Many of their services not working (including DNS and IPv6 and split tunneling) also their app integrated with a trojan,

  2. alproc says:

Pure VPN. A Pure Nightmare. Have had it for two years. Often hard to connect, disconnects sometimes 6 – 7 times an hour, won’t reconnect, difficult to use, customer service seem never to have heard the word “service”. There has to be something better. Their ads claim to be “reliable and easy to use”. It’s a bald-faced lie. I would never recommend PureVPN to anyone. 1 Star.

  3. Cnem1 says:

Awful VPN. Connection worked fine for the first few months, then, after a few months, it started dropping every few minutes, making it impossible to use. I’ve tried everything the helpdesk suggested but nothing would work. Clearly a problem on their side, but they refused to refund. So, stay well away. It will stop working and they will keep your money.

    • admin says:

We are really sorry to hear about the bad experience. We will definitely be testing the service again to see what problems customers are facing and subsequently update the review. If you are looking for alternatives, you might want to consider trying out NordVPN or ExpressVPN

  4. John says:

Not downloaded yet but had a long very helpful live chat this was fast response and very informative by a computer named Liza or it may have been a Guy named George who knows now. That makes getting this even more important so will get it once my refund from a VPN company I tried and paid refunds me for a useless program no names.
    Be Careful out there.

  5. Brent says:

I love to explore different social media websites and most of the time I have to access blocked content. I use PureVPN when I need to open blocked websites and other online stuff. This VPN service offers excellent customer support as well as encrypted tunneling feature. That is why I prefer using this VPN to maintain my online anonymity.

  6. Charlie says:

I was thinking about using an effective VPN service for more than a year or so. Thanks to one of my friends, who recommended me to use PureVPN. Now I am over the moon because I have received exceptional response from this VPN provider. I have been using this VPN for the last couple of months and it seems to be working according to my expectations.

    Thanks again,

  7. Sarah Christensen says:

The fear of getting noticed online and being monitored or watched always gets me anxious, I am what you can call scopophobic. I hardly sign up to services online and am very reluctant to give out personal information on websites. The NSA wiretapping & surveillance news got me so nervous I reduced the time I spend online and using apps on mobile. I began using pure vpn right after the NSA leaks in 2013. I had to go through more than 20 reviews and finally decided on pure because of their 1+1 offer and an excellent privacy policy.
The service is decent, lets me stream HBO, Sky Sports and listen to music on Spotify. There is however the issue that it disconnects during peak hours so I have to connect through a slower speed server. Their best servers that I found were in Sweden, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Belgium, Paris, UK and USA. I also got their dedicated IP to unblock HBO and hasn’t messed up since the last 15 months that I have been using it … all in all a good service to have for streaming.

  8. Raul Bell says:

I used to be a windows 8 user and recently shifted over to a Macbook.. Installing any program
always took me hours to find the right file format. So, before I actually
thought of buying this vpn service, I requested their chat support guy that
this is my situation and I will need your help to install and setup my Mac so
that I can download torrents. To my surprise, they helped me throughout the
process. It is not easy to find a provider who has such dedicated support team.
The service is good too though, sometimes European (Germany, Luxemburg and
Sweden) servers fail to connect but I try other regions (France and UK) and
    they offer average speeds.

PureVPN has decent in my experience. I opted for the service a year back when I needed
to download torrents. It has given me good stable connections and I had no
issue in downloading any torrent from anywhere. But the speed was not up to
what I expected on my Windows laptop.. I normally get a downloading speed that
crosses 10 MBps any day but even with good seeds the torrent file never seems
to cross 6 Mbps. This is one issue that I have faced till now but I guess this
much can be justifiable as it is still helping me download the files I want.

Thank you PureVPN for making my life so much easier, shout out to Albert in PureVPN
support for his help all the time. I moved to New York from London almost 1
year ago and I have been an old user of the BBC iPlayer app. But since it can
ONLY be viewed in the UK, I was having a hard time adjusting to other forms of
news with my morning coffee. Then a friend informed me about this software and
since that time I haven’t had a bad morning. Now I get to read world news and
everything else through my phone all thanks to PureVPN. I would highly
recommend anyone who needs a vpn service to access geo-restricted apps on a

I having been using PureVPN since they introduced their 1+1 plan, and it’s been good for me ever since I began using. We love to watch TV series online and prefer to see them right when they come out, and can’t wait for the downloadable episode to be available. I was able to watch all the Game of Thrones season 6 episodes through HBO Now, which is geo-restricted in Malaysia. Purevpn has helped me unblock HBO and streaming speed was good, there were slow speeds sometimes, maybe 40% speed drop but streaming was always fine on the HBO Now app on my PC and android phone. Their android app is not good but the PC Windows app is very good.

  12. Alan says:

I am a die-hard fan of Dwayne Johnson and have been trying to watch his new season of Ballers 2 from Australia for some time now and it would not have been possible without using VPN. The show is an HBO Now exclusive and restricted to US only. With PureVPN, I was able to unlock it and will be able to stay up to date with every episode of season 2 now. For me, this was the best thing I came across on the Internet and it has helped me greatly. The support center guys were really helpful, provided all the help to unblock the app and sign up to HBO Now.

  13. John Levine says:

I have been using PureVPN for over a year now and it has been working well so far. I use it mainly for unblocking websites, specifically Netflix, and its doing the job perfectly. The split tunneling feature is impressive, as I can select my browser to go through the VPN while letting everything else untouched. They also have a smart DNS feature (which I got it free with the 1 year package). It does work well and I guess its part of the reason I am able to stream videos without too much interruptions. Anyhow, PureVPN should work well for anyone that wants to unblock websites or Netflix like services.

  14. Terry says:

Just signed up with PureVPN. Your review states that the 12 month sub includes SmartDNS.
Well it doesn’t and so far as a money back guarantee is concerned there is a penalty if you exceed 500m.
    Very dodgy

    • Thank you for pointing that out, we will talk to their support and update this accordingly. Also, regarding the money back guarantee if a person downloads 500m of data and then asks for the refund sounds shady. But we cannot comment on that as PureVPN makes its own policies we don’t have a say in it.

  15. Thank you for your comment, Regarding the logs issue you can contact the PureVPN support directly. We have only written what we found through our experience and as well as the experience of PureVPN’s users. However if you feel that there is any discrepancy in the review then feel free to contact us directly.

  16. Tufan says:

I am a PureVPN user and I don’t have any problem with it. In fact, I extended my monthly account to 12 months. I highly recommend using their VPN client instead of creating the VPN connection manually as PureVPN client is very optimized and has premium features like the ability to find the fastest server automatically, split tunneling, etc.

  17. supes says:

Thanks for the purevpn Review but they need to work making their connections more stable.

  18. hellblazer says:

Works well in Australia and thats all I need, good speeds, no logs and an OK support. Its cheap too if you buy the annual package.

  19. Bryan says:

I am using it for around 6 months and I am very happy. They have very fast and physical servers in many countries. PureVPN is helping out people secure their privacy to a great extent. Their support team is really great and always available 24/7.

  20. Wayne says:

I have used PureVPN. In fact I am using it for past 2 years. And to be honest I found it to be very good. I have used a lot of VPN’s and I can only stick to purevpn because of fast servers and their split tunneling tech.

  21. james says:

Well, I was skeptical at first when I heard about this VPN but turns out
this works fine. I love the fact it works when I visit China and I
absolutley love the split tunneling feature. Kudos on the review

Thank you for the review. I went with PureVPN and i am now over the moon with happiness.

I think a fair few who don’t have it should consider that it’s over half the price at the moment and that continues yearly at the cost you bought it at.

I personally bought it to stick it to the government and Hollywood.

My computer is my business, and so is what i do or don’t do with it.

        Cheers BestVPN
