The Australian Government is smashing its users with a 10% tax on digital services which is being called the ‘Netflix Tax’.

Netflix, which was launched in March, was received with quite a bit of excitement as before the launch the Australian consumers had to use a VPN to circumvent the restrictions of Netflix. With over 500,000 users in Australia it was only a matter of time before Netflix would tap this market.

But it seems that with the advent of the ‘Netflix Tax’ Australian users will have to resort to a VPN service once again to avoid these taxes or they could even bypass the Australian Netflix all together and start accessing the US Netflix which they had been accessing in the past.

In an interview with ABC Radio, Consumer advocate group Choice said that Australians can avoid the tax on downloaded goods by using a VPN to appear outside Australia. Alan Kirkland, CEO of Choice emphasized that the government should be looking in to this issue and come up with a solution.  Kirkland further stated that “We need to make it easier … in order to encourage greater competition.”
