What is a VPN, and Why Do You Need VPN For China?

VPN or Virtual Private Networks are exclusive privacy & security tools designed to:

  1. Replace your IP address with a new one, also known as IP Masking
  2. Hide all your online activities using leading edge Tunneling & Encryption technologies

A VPN creates what is known as a virtual network using your existing ISP connection. Once the VPN has established the network all your activities pass through what is known as a, secure tunnel, which ensures that all data & requests passing through it are encrypted into alphanumeric code.

china tunnel traffic

While tunneling is used to hide all your online activities from the ISP, the Chinese internet police, the Great Firewall of China and other Chinese surveillance technologies, encryption ensures that all data transfers are made useless to others by converting them into meaningless text. If you notice in the diagram above, tunneling is indicated by the blue arrow, while encryption is indicated by the thin red line around the arrow.

China restricts its cyberspace using an assembly of technologies restricting its local netizen population and visitors from accessing any foreign websites that challenge the legal requirements of operating within the country. The Communist Party not only restricts the internet for political reasons but also controls the news, media & entertainment that can be delivered online.

There are more than 60 online regulations defined & implemented by the Chinese Communist Government. Amnesty International reported that China hosts the highest number of imprisoned journalists, bloggers and social activists in the world.  Internet watchdog, Reporters without Borders, gave China the following raking in 2015:

China’s internet is third from the bottom and has one of the worst obstacles to access, limits on content and violations of user privacy in the world. You can access the complete FreedomOnNet report in Chinese & English.

The Chinese government’s weapon of choice, The Golden Shield Project or more commonly known as The Great Firewall of China, proactively blocks all foreign media, news, streaming services, social platforms, games and apps that do not comply with Chinese cyber legislation.

Which Websites are blocked in China?

The Chinese government blocks all online news sources that present an alternative point of view for instance The Wallstreet Journal, Guardian, The Economist, Time Magazine, The Independent, Gizmodo, Tech Crunch, Ars Technica and hundreds of others. The Chinese government demands self-censorship of news before it is published by online news outlets.

The list of social networks blocked by the Chinese Government goes all the way from Facebook, Reddit, SnapChat, WhatsApp, Twitter, Tumblr, WordPress, Instagram, Pinterest, Google Gmail Services, Microsoft Live Services and any other service we can randomly think of. All such social platforms are replaced by knockoffs developed by the Chinese government that are actively monitored and censored.

Apple Removes VPN Apps from App Store in China – What’s Next?

China is in hot pursuit of VPN services and its users for some time. Finally, it has struck down the hammer, as VPN crackdown has led to various providers shutting up shop in China. This decision comes into effect because many users bypassed ‘The Great Firewall’ using VPNs. Following this crackdown, Apple removed all VPN apps from its Chinese App Store.

Previously, some VPN services were taken down from the App Store, as they didn’t meet the license requirements. However, the gravity of this move by Apple has left many iOS users in dismay. So what options to do you have? You can get the providers iOS app from their website.

There are APK files of VPN software still available on the Web. Users can also get these files from their VPN provider’s websites. In addition, VPN apps from Google Play Store are still available. If you happen to have an Android device, you can still use VPN services in China.

How Does China Block VPN Services?

Courtesy of the Golden Shield Project the Chinese Government has complete authoritarian control not only over its peoples lives, but also over the entire Chinese internet too. While blocking websites, censoring news&media over claims of nationalism, and monitoring social feeds remains intact, the Chinese government now actively blocks & disrupts VPN services.

Usually, VPN connections are blocked off in various ways. One way that the Chinese government definitely uses is blocking off the Ports that VPN providers’ use. These ports are used through tunneling protocols, for example, PPTP or SSTP, thus allowing the Chinese internet police to immediately identify the VPN connection.

Similarly, data packets are inspected by the Great Firewall of China to identify VPN connections from foreign servers. The Golden Shield Project achieves its censorship by filtering all VPN connections using its Great Firewall Technology. Although it is legal to use VPN within China, routinely the Chinese government conducts massive crackdowns on VPN users & services.

Every year VPNs & social networks are intentionally disrupted by the Chinese government on the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square tragedy. In January 2016, the Hong Kong Free Press reported how the Chinese government partnered with cloud service providers including Microsoft Azure China to discourage the use of circumvention tools like VPN & proxy servers. An official notice sent out to customers by cloud providers states that:

“According to the telecom regulations and the requirement of MIIT and Internet supervision agency, no company or individual can provide hosting service for illegal “over the wall” proxy sites, or illegally mount any VPN service to abroad. Recently, the regulators have found several Windows Azure customers violated the related regulations and demanded immediate shut-down of the service deployment.

We will continuously receive notification from the regulators to close such sites or shut down service deployment. In order to avoid unnecessary risks and losses, we recommend that you conduct self-examination and rectification immediately. In case you have involved in any of illegal behaviors, please stop immediately. Otherwise, you would assume all the consequences of such violation.”

The only time the Chinese government thought of blocking circumvention tools running through cloud services a massive internet blackout occurred. When the Chinese government blocked cloud servers for project. Thousands of websites were inaccessible and rendered blocked, while netizens were left stranded with no means to access the outside world.

Why China Blocks VPN?

To answer the why all it takes is a basic search on Google News and you will be bombarded with featured articles over just why the Chinese government blocks VPN & other circumvention tools. The official story of the government is discouraging content that that is politically incorrect, criticizes China’s government& its laws, questions Chinese socialist values, and undermines the solidarity of Mainland China.

How To Access YouTube and Facebook in China Without VPN

As both a precaution and recommendation we will always advise using a VPN when accessing any foreign social network& website from China.

Certain proxy servers still active within China allow netizens to bypass the Great Firewall and access services including YouTube and Google+ services from anywhere in mainland China. The most prominent ones that we have come to know of are listed here for your convenience. Free China VPN Apps for Android

The Google Play Store features over 100 VPN services for Android devices available to download and use instantly. The number of free China VPN apps on Android makes unblocking convenient but online privacy less safe for users within China. Without knowledge of the developer,(which can simply be the Chinese government) Chinese users tend to install & connect to free China VPN apps on their Android OS devices.

free china vpn apps for android

It is essential to know where your free provider is based, if they have a privacy policy and what permissions the China VPN app requires on your device.

china android vpn permissions

If you notice in the image above, I took screenshots from the permissions box of 4 different China VPN services for Android. None of the providers had any indication of where they were located, none of the providers offered privacy policies and if you notice above they require access to your real location or identity.

Turbo VPN for China

TurboVPN is one of the two China VPN services for Android that I found convincing enough to use for free. Turbo VPN does request access to your location when you download the app but it is a great option for streaming video & listening to music from blocked services like Netflix, HBO & Spotify.

turbo vpn china

Turbo VPN is one of the top rated China VPN for Android, given it is also a quality passed app on the iTunes app store. TurboVPN also struck the 5 million downloads mark, and by the looks of it there are some great reviews for both the older & new versions of the app. The app is small file size (6MB) plus requires permissions for your location & WIFI information, so use only for streaming and news websites.

I also tested the app with my 1MBPS connection and experienced bandwidth loss of 18% which is excellent.

turbo vpn speed test

TurboVPN is an excellent choice for mobile users who frequently connect to public Wi-Fi networks for video, music, browsing but is not for downloading. The app allows you to connect to 6 servers in India, Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom, USA and France. Simple once click connectivity and not too many options to tweak makes the app an excellent China VPN Android alternative.

Best Free VPN for China

While premium VPN services are the way to go, there is a massive selection of free VPN providers for China. It is important to understand that these services are never really free and what is at stake is more valuable than money.

In a brave new online & connected world, the real price if using free VPN services is “YOU”! Your online activities, your downloads, your buying habits, the brands you like, the food you eat, the movies you watch and where you work are all of the interest to free VPN providers.

Consider the fact that the service is free and as far as I know “there is no free lunch in business”, which means there is something that we are not being told. Most free VPN providers in China offer their services with unlimited data but fail to address their limited features including:

  1. One device connection per user
  2. Limited servers to connect to
  3. Limited speed on servers
  4. No privacy policies
  5. No apps
  6. Unsecure servers

While free VPN for China allows only one device to connect to an account, premium China VPN services offer connectivity over multiple devices. For instance, PureVPN offers connectivity on up to 5 devices with their app and 20 devices when configured on a router.

Privacy Policies are a crucial element of any privacy & IT provider. This document establishes the policies outlining of storing, sharing and protecting the personal information of subscribers. This document indicates who will have access to your data, if data is retained for longer periods of time and if law enforcement will be given your information upon a warranted request. Free VPN providers in China offer no such policies.

One of the most critical issues of free VPN in China is their inability to secure their servers with proper measures. Since they have no funding and subscription income you can expect that your data is always under threat with these providers. Free providers earn their income by offering your browsing activities, habits and personal information to 3rd party marketers & IT giants.

We have already reviewed various major free VPN providers that offer proper feature bundles including defined privacy policies, PC & mobile apps, multi-device connectivity, unlimited data, multiple servers and military-grade server & user security. The top three on our list include:

TunnelBear for China

As one of the popular VPN for China, TunnelBear is a highly regarded privacy provider across the world. TunnelBear offers a free limited feature version of its VPN app for China over Android and iOS. You are required to sign up to the service and that activates your free service perpetually with the following limits:

  • 750 MB data free every month (you can get lots of free data if you share the brand on your social feeds)

While the app comes with its limits, the interface is excellent and the new UI is very stable, eliminating the crashes from previous versions of the app. TunnelBear for China is a great option, but, the limit will eventually end and you will have to update to a premium plan. One of the most common issues reported now is the inability of the app to work with 4G networks.

tunnelbear for china

The most you can do with TunnelBear is secure your online messaging or listen to music apps for a while. Once the limit is finished you will probably consider removing the app or using an unlimited VPN app like TurboVPN above. You can read the complete TunnelBear VPN review to know more about the provider’s premium services for China.

As online restrictions and censorship grow in China, a VPN for China’s cyberspace has become essential to secure yourself from persecution and punishment by the Chinese Internet Police. 12 Responses to 5 Best VPN For China Services Review *Updated October 2017*
  1. Elmore Hutchinson says:

I am living in China and I have had tried many VPN providers. It is very frustrating to pay for a service which doesn’t work. That is the reason I am writing this for those people who are planning to purchase VPN service for China. You’ll not hear much about Astrill in VPN discussions/forums but in China Astrill is the only VPN provider which works. I came to know about Astrill from one of my expat Chinese friend. Its been 3 years now and I am still user of Astrill. Best thing about Astrill is their customer support: Very Efficient and Friendly.

  2. Franklin says:

I go to China for business trips often, I almost live there. I never had any issues with my current VPN –Astrill. I used nord and pure before but the lag in their apps made me feel unsafe. Whenever I contact their cs, I only get “it’s normal” response or they ask me to reboot it.

  3. Kala Alexander says:

My expressvpn stopped working on Netflix since last 2 months so I checked and changed to nordvpn. The support at nord confirmed that the service will work and it has been working ever since I bought. The price is very affordable with $4 a month so it very decent for unblocking Netflix. I also tried US server and signed up to HBO Now, its average during daytime but in night I get very fast video.

  4. George Aguilar says:

Last year I travelled to USA for business and couldn’t access any of my chinese banking accounts from there. My friend let me use his vpn to unblock the bank services, so this year I took Ivacy vpn with me. I never face disconnects and it works really fast even on my iphone when I make transactions online. I was lucky I got the service so cheap and it works really decent for my unblocking and their support told me I get additional online security with the service. Some servers don’t even connect, so I would suggest to only people who want to use European and US servers.

  5. Charlie Adler says:

I got expressvpn last year with a yearly account to watch football on beINSports MENA and access my gmail from my home here in yining. I could enjoy free football when I was in Germany studying engineering but in china it’s hard to even check your facebook. Anyhoo, streaming is decent and never in HD because the connection is so slow with VPN, but all websites unblock like gmail, facebook and Instagram also. Sometimes on weekends I cannot watch the match in good quality because the speed doesn’t go above 10 mbps. I still consider expressvpn very good because it secure my phone, pc and tablet with one account.

  6. Christopher Adams says:

I recently read how the chinese government arrest people who comment on videos online. Then came the very dangerous news that accounts were being closed down if comments were found offensive or against laws. My brother shares his purevpn account with me and I use it on Youtube with fake gmail account with a US address. My account is active and there is no sign that police is monitoring me. The only problem with pure is that the connection goes dead for some 10-20 sec otherwise it has lets me be safe from the great firewall, the speed suffers a lot during peak times though.

  7. Greg Abbey says:

After I finished studies and came back home all my social accounts were blocked here in Beijing. So I looked around and trialed 7 different VPN providers and finally ended up with nordvpn especially for its price and it unblocks facebook, gmail, insta, snapchat and twitter. My facebook was most important since all my uni friends are on it. The speed is average since the chinese government blocks vpn. I can also unblock my Netflix account and the amazing thing I can use the USA Netflix, so full points for nordvpn.

  8. Stash says:

I was using ivacy vpn for the last 2 years and I was not happy with some issues. I tested it for DNS leak tests and it exposed my IP several times and I was getting 9 mb speed on my 60 MB virgin media broadband, I read on a forum how not all services are great in all countries. I found NORD vpn’s review on a twitter post and it was really cheap like Ivacy for the services it offered. The service is really good, but goes slow sometimes on friday nights. The avg speedtest was very good every time I have tested it, the best was 107 Ping, 41 mb download and 7 mb upload. The apps don’t look that great but once you learn and use them a bit, they are ok.

  9. Heth says:

After Chinese government banned my vpn provider servers I canceled it and got ivacy vpn. It’s always been cheapso I needed to know how good it work. Signup was fast, the username & password came to email quickly, apps are so simple I love them on both my Windows PC&android phablet. When I used the USA server to watch Netflix it didn’t work but then the support told me that vpn don’t work with Netflix anymore. I got NowTV in the UK and HBO Now US to watch movies & tv shows, the vpn works fine for both services. I tested the speed for my 10 MBPS Shanghai broadband connection and the best test got 179 Ping, 4.73 MBPS download and, 0.82 MBPS upload.

  10. Jonas says:

This January my internet protection kept giving me notifications about intrusions being made on my network. Since the connection is shared we had the password changed but same started to happen after a few weeks. All of us decided to pool together and get a vpn service, we finally agreed on pure vpn for its price. We setup the service on our router and it works on 20 devices at the same time, we even tested at a house party. The network intrusion messages are gone and we can even use blocked websites without any additional setup. I really like their android app it’s so simple I just have to click connect. The best part even when I was travelling on train to uni the vpn was still connected on my 4G network.

  11. Alicia says:

I was using PIA vpn for over two years and it began working really erratic recently, so I thought of moving to a different service.I signed up with expressvpn which is a bit expensive, but the streaming & torrent speeds are so awesome it was love at first sight. Rarely does the connection drop and some of the servers are bitchingly fast including Netherlands, Germany and United Kingdom.

  12. saraboulos says:

I was trying to watch Last week tonight with john oliver on HBO Now from Shanghai last week as I used to back in new jersey. This country is such a problem with internet, couldnt even access my hbo now account. I had expressvpn and its such a gift in china to have a vpn service, unblocked hbo now and Youtube plus accessed my gmail, facebook and instagram. My recommendation never buy vpn when in china, always buy beforehand you never know cant even access express VPN chat from the Shanghai IP, have to keep VPN always on.
